The Problem

Every winter storm, Home Depot and Lowe's sell out of ice melt within hours. Restocking takes 2–4 weeks. In January 2026, Morton told Massachusetts contractors "there is no more salt." The retail supply chain can't surge — but consumer demand does, with 3–5x spikes during storm events. Meanwhile, 25,000–30,000 propane exchange locations across the snow belt face significantly reduced demand from October to April — underutilized winter capacity.

The Solution — Three Tiers, Always in Stock

SaltTap Basic

$10.99 · 40 lbs · 61% margin

Rock salt. Competitive with HD ($11.97/50lb) and Lowe's ($12.98/50lb) — but available 24/7.

SaltTap Pro

$14.99 · 40 lbs · 77% margin

Rock salt + liquid CaCl₂ performance boost. Enhanced melting to -10°F. Created on-demand by the machine.

SaltTap Pet

$32.00 · 30 lbs · 69% margin

Premium MgClâ‚‚/CaClâ‚‚ pet-safe blend. $1.07/lb vs. Safe Paw at $2.75/lb. Prefilled branded buckets.

How It Works

Phase 1 (Winter 2026–27): All three tiers as prefilled buckets in lockers at 5–10 Blue Rhino grocery & convenience store locations in Greater Boston. We target locations where ice melt ISN'T a core category — grocery stores carry 2–5 SKUs; gas stations carry zero. Zero channel conflict, pure incremental revenue. Zero capital cost to Blue Rhino. Proves demand and collects price elasticity data across all tiers.

Phase 2: Patented SaltTap dispensing machines — single hopper of commodity rock salt + liquid CaCl₂ injection creates the Pro tier on-demand. Locker array for Pet buckets. One service truck handles everything: dumps rock salt, tops off chemical drums, restocks lockers.

Why Blue Rhino
The Ask

Pilot proposal: 5–10 Greater Boston grocery & convenience store locations, November 2026 – March 2027. We start at locations where ice melt isn't a core indoor category — zero channel conflict with the retailer, and we drive winter foot traffic they wouldn't otherwise get. SaltTap supplies all product (delivered to Blue Rhino depots). Blue Rhino provides cage/kiosk space, restocking via existing route drivers, and signage approval. $0 capex. Near-zero incremental opex for Blue Rhino — product is added to existing winter routes. Blue Rhino receives $3–5 commission per bucket sold. Success metric: ≥10 buckets/location/week. If met, first right of negotiation on snow belt expansion.
